We started off eating at Karim Roti-Mataba. The meal was very good. Nice selection of dishes.
Next I jumped on the back of Piak’s scooter and we went back to Chatuchak. I have always enjoyed videos of a car just driving through the streets… soooo I figured I would make one of our ride.
You can skip to minute 10:30 to watch the train go by. We almost get run off the road right after that! Danger, Will Robinson! Danger! 😱
I bought my first motorcycle with Piak back when we were 16. A Honda CB360. Neither of us had a driver’s license and we didn’t know how to ride a motorcycle. But we scrounged up $500 and some nice Cal grad student sold us her used one and let us push it around the corner. I learned to drive it on the way back to Piak’s house. (We had to store it there so that my parents wouldn’t see it. We never got insurance for the thing. I think we registered it at DMV though… maybe we didn’t 🤔)
We loved that thing. We would drive it everywhere! I even took it to see my Mormon girlfriend at BYU!!! Our friend Sam McBride was driving a friend around in the Berkeley hills one rainy night and crashed it under a moving bus. They both ran away but the bike was toast after that. Sigh. Good Times™️!
Piak is telling me that I couldn’t survive the streets of Bangkok cuz I was such a crazy driver back in the day. He is 100% correct. I wouldn’t even try… unless maybe it was raining and a friend needed a ride home 🥳
I figured, if one long video is good, a second long video of what I see at Chatuchak should be even better.
Hopefully the clip above gives some feel of the crazy size and variety of merchants at this market. And, to be clear, weekend area is only one part of a much larger mall and a near-by community of wholesalers. I could spend a month walking every day and not see everything.
On our way back to the room we stopped at another market to pick up some delicious juice! Yuuuuuuuummmm! We then packed up our stuff and moved to a hotel near the airport. The place we stayed at last night was in the heart of a major party area and Max got no sleep. Hopefully, this new spot will be quieter and we won’t have anymore health-related downtime.
